Generic Modems
Please refer to the notes on Rockwell Chipsets. Most "generic" modems are based on Rockwell chips. Some other major manufacturers of generic chipsets are Cirrus Logic, Sierra SemiConductor, Lucent Technologies, PCtel and Texas Instruments. If you are unsure about the type of chip that your modem uses (in Windows 3.x or Macintosh), enter any Terminal program type "ATI3" (without the quotes). On occasion, "ATI3" does not report the proper chip information. In these cases, try also "ATI4" "ATI5" and "ATI6." A Rockwell chip will answer with "RCC...." or may even say "Rockwell.... Modem...." A Cirrus Logic will have a chip identification number that begins with CL. For example, a common 14.4K modem will answer "CL1414...." In Windows 95, you can obtain the same information by choosing the "More Info" button in the Diagnostics section of the Modem Control Panel.
