    We have had big problems with these modems getting hung up on line noise. In most cases, this fixes the problem. Keep reading if this doesn't work for you...

    This is the string that finally worked for the ModemMaster 6000 and other modems that ship with the PCtel 33.6 chipset.

    OK... When you just can't make these things connect, try this. The +MS=V34,1,14400,26400 does this: Forces V34, sets auto-reliable mode, sets a floor connect speed of 14,400 and a celing connect speed of 26400. Lower the ceiling if you still cannot connect.

    I know that this string works in e-Machine computers.

    Many of the PCtel modems do not respond to the +MS= commands. In this case, you can limit the modem speed by using N0 (the number zero - auto-speed off) and then S37=12 (for V.34 - S37=11 for 14400). The S34=xx sets the bit rate. Replace xx with the desired maximum speed:
    0=2400
    1=4800
    2=7200
    3=9600
    4=12000
    5=14400
    6=16400
    7=19200
    8=21600
    9=24000
    10=26400
    11=28800
    12=31200
    13=33600

    For HSP modems, which are (soft-modems) The init string to prevent them from disconnecting alot is: N0S37=12 (note that is a zero) This is especially true for ISP's with Digital Equipment, "soft modems" tend to be very finiky to begin with, & from my experience, they do not like digital equipment in the least.

    Since these modems are host-based (they use the host PCs CPU to process information), they can drain the CPU cycles on the host machine. This string is reported to force the modem to use no more than 30% of the host's CPU cycles. This should result in faster running Internet apps and a more stable connection.
