In Roseburg Oregon, our local telephone company switch does not allow for
56K connections and we have relatively poor quality phone lines to boot.
As a result, we have to disable 56K capabilities to insure reliable
connections for many modems. Please keep this in mind when using the init
strings that we list. Many of our listed init strings will disable 56K
negotiations (which may be necessary to do anyway if you are having problems
connecting or with unreliable connections).
Please read below for methods of adding initialization strings to your settings.
The method for adding intialization strings varies depending on the software
you are running. Below are tips for some of the more popular programs. Modem
initialization strings typically begin with the letters "AT" We have left
those letters out of the beginning of most of our listed strings because most
software applications will add the "AT" for you if you don't type it.
Windows 95 and 98 Dial-Up Networking
- Double click your "My Computer" icon.
- Double click your "Dial-Up Networking" icon.
- Click your RIGHT mouse button on your connection icon.
- Click "Properties."
- Click the "Configure" button.
- Click the "Connection" tab.
- Click the "Advanced" button.
- The initialization string goes into the "Extra settings" box.
- The initialization strings can, but do not have to begin with "AT"
Macintosh OS 7.61 and Later
- Macs using OS 7.61 or later have a problem... The built-in dialer (PPP or
Remote Access) has no capability of modifying an init string. If you are
having problems that require an initialization string, you need to replace
your dialer. I highly recommend FreePPP. You can download it from
HERE.
Macs Using FreePPP 2.5.x
- Open FreePPP Setup
- Click the "Modem Setup" button
- Click inside of the circle labeled "Use:"
- Type the initialization string in the box
- The initialization strings can, but do not have to begin with "AT"
Macs Using FreePPP 2.6.x
- Open FreePPP Setup
- Click the "Modems" tab
- Select your modem and then click "Edit"
- Click inside of the circle labeled "Use:"
- Type the initialization string in the box
- The initialization strings can, but do not have to begin with "AT"
Macs Using ConfigPPP or MacPPP
- Open ConfigPPP or MacPPP
- Click the "Config" button
- Type the initialization string in the "Modem Init" box

Windows 3.1 Using Internet Explorer Dialer
- There is no way to directly edit the init string
- You can locate a file on your hard drive called "modems2.ini" This file
contains the string used to initialize the modem.
Windows 3.1 Using Quarterdeck Internet Suite (QWinsock)
- Open Location Manager
- Click "Edit Locations and Providers"
- Click "Edit"
