ABOUT THE MODEMS SITE

About the author
This site was conceived and created by Christopher Ostmo while working for Rosenet Internet Services, an Internet Service Provider in Roseburg, Oregon. Christopher has worked in Internet Services since July 1995. Significant amounts of information have been contributed by Joel Camacho, another Rosenet technician. Christopher now works as Lead Programmer for AppIdeas.com. AppIdeas.com specializes in complex, dynamic web site applications. Christopher still contributes information to this web site whenever he can.
About this site
Early on in the support game, we realized that there is too much information for one person to store in his or her brain on any kind of a long term basis. The bulk of the technical information that we needed to store was related to modems. This site was constructed originally in the Winter of 1995 as a place for Rosenet technicians to place their notes for later retrieval. Since the site was originally designed to be self-serving, we were very shocked to see how popular it became among others, especially since we never advertised the site in any way. It is equally surprising to see the continuing growth of interest in analog modem technology that exists even to this day.

As the Internet grew, so did the amount of information that needed to be recorded. In response to that growth, this site has gone through several transitions. At first, the site was a single (very long) HTML page. It quickly grew into many pages with hundreds of links. As it did, the site became very difficult to maintain. By the time the site you see now was created, there were more than 120 pages and 1300 links that needed to be maintained regularly. Since we don't have unlimited amounts of time for this project, we incorporated some new technologies. We migrated the site into being driven by a MySQL database and powered with the PHP programming language. These technologies allow us to maintain this site with minimum effort.

About the title of the web site

A lot of people have asked where I got the title "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Modems ...But Were Afraid To Ask." I have to admit it... When I named the site, I had been staying up too late and watching too many Woody Allen movies. I changed the word "Always" (from the movie title) to "Ever" because no sane person has "Always" wanted to know something about modems. The "Modems, Modems, Modems" in the title bar was something that I had stuck in my head. It is a computer geek version of the song "Rawhide." If you know the song, try singing it... Modems, Modems, Modems... Now that you're thinking of it, it'll be stuck in your head too! These are the kinds of songs that you are likely to make up when you've sat through too many episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

We hope that you are able to learn from our experience...
